Illinois Central baseball pulls away late
Vikings fall on the road to Cougars
Unable to keep up with Illinois Central College's flury of runs late in the game, the Glen Oaks Community College baseball team lost an eight-inning road game Thursday, 15-5.
The Vikings scored a run in the first and three in the second for an early 4-1 lead. The Cougars tacked on a run in the third but Glen Oaks also got another one in the top of the fourth to remain out front by three runs. But that was all the Vikings could do on just two hits in the game. Illinois Central would pile up 13 more runs the rest of the way, including a six-run eighth inning to close out the victory.
Brayden Clark and Erick Marin both singled and drove in runs for GOCC.
With the bases loaded and one out in the first, Andrew Thorpe was hit by a pitch and Steven Drewyor scored. In the second, McCullan Greene, Cameron Humeston and Drewyor were all plunked to fill up the bags. Jayden Hamilton stepped up to plate and was hit as well, scoring a run and giving Glen Oaks a 2-1 lead. Clark grounded into a fielder's choice and Drewyor scored on an error. A sacrifice fly by Marin scored Hamilton and the Vikings were up 4-1 through two innings.
Clark singled in the fourth inning to drive in Drewyor for the Vikings' final run.
Brady Mescher took the loss for GOCC after allowing nine hits and six earned runs over six innings. He struck out four and walked one batter. Andrew Onuegbu surrendered nine earned runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings.
