Glen Oaks men throttle Mott on the road
Vikings move to 3-0 in hoops.
In a nonconference men's basketball matchup Wednesday at Mott Community College, the Vikings uncorked their highest-scoring effort since 2023 in a 111-66 victory.
Darius Styles hit five 3-pointers en route to a team-high 17 points, leading a case of five double-digit scorers for GOCC, which is now 3-0 this season. All 13 Glen Oaks players scored against the Bears, which included a 16-point erruption off the bench by Keri Foster, who also led the squad with eight assists. Marlon Gaitan and Jordan Lomax both finished with 14 points and Akin Smith had 12.
A Smith triple at the 16:23 mark in the first half gave the Vikings a 10-2 advantage. Mott would climb back in it and make it a two-point contest over the next four minutes of play, but buckets from Jordan Lomax, a swipe and layup by Kelvion Brown, a lay-in by Amauri Moore and a triple by Jordan Lomax made it 21-12 at the midway point of the half.
Foster, Styles and Joreim Lomax ass banged in 3-pointers to start what turned into a lopsided affair. Glen Oaks built a 50-25 lead by intermission and kept that gas pedal pinned to the floor in the second half. The Vikings shot 55 percent from the field and and 51.5 percent (17-of-33) from behind the arc for the game.
But it was limiting Mott to 66 points that really impressed GOCC first-year head coach Sam Waniewski.
"Overall, our defense really set the tone from the beginning and I'm really proud of our guys for getting this road win," he said.
The Viking reserves accounted for 52 points Wednesday.
"I thought our bench, especially Keri and JP (Jordan Pisco), gave us a huge spark off the bench in the first half," Waniewski explained. "Darius did a great job of being aggressive and getting hot from the outside."
The Vikings out-rebounded Mott 37-24 on the defensive glass and 50-36 overall. Brown pulled down a team-best nine boards — all on the defensive side. Foster also led the team with four steals.
