LMC earns softball sweep over Vikings
Glen Oaks drops two on the road.
The ball didn't bounce the right way Wednesday for the Glen Oaks Community College softball team in a pair of Michigan Community College Athletic Association games at Lake Michigan College.
The Red Hawks put together a 7-3 victory in Game 1 and then broke the Vikings' hearts in Game 2 with a walk-off single for an 8-7 win (eight innings).
Glen Oaks dropped to 20-12 overall and 15-9 in MCCAA Western Conference play. LMC moved to 19-15 overall and 14-10 in the conference.
In Game 1, Glen Oaks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before LMC erupted for five runs in the bottom of the third. The Red Hawks added two more runs in the fifth. Glen Oaks plated one more in the top of the sixth. The Vikings had a total of six hits and five errors in the game.
Brady Lesher and Kacie Scott both finished with two hits for GOCC, while Sage Pruett and Aimee Reinhardt both had one. Scott and Reinhardt each hit solo home runs. Dakota Sigler took the loss in a complete game effort where she gave up eight hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts and four walks.
In Game 2, GOCC again plated two runs in the top of the first inning but LMC answered with three in the home half of the frame. The Vikings battled back with two runs in the second inning for a 4-3 advantage. Glen Oaks added to the cushion with three runs in the fifth for a 7-3 lead.
Lake Michigan poured it on offensively in the sixth inning with four runs to tie the game. In the eighth inning, the Red Hawks produced a one-out single to put the winning run on base. The next batter hit a hard grounder to center field to end it.
Glen Oaks had eight hits and LMC finished with 11 in the contest. For the Vikings, Alea Fisher and Lesher both had two hits, and Pruett, Scott, Reinhardt and Aubrey Mealor had one apiece. Lesher led the team with three RBI.
Ava Mejia was in the circle for Glen Oaks. She surrendered 11 hits, was responsible for only two earned runs and she struck out nine batters.
