Five Vikings Make MCCAA Softball Teams
Sigler and Mejia earn All-MCCAA nods.
LANSING – The Michigan Community College Athletic Association releases the 2024 MCCAA softball awards, highlighted by Mott and Lansing community colleges sweeping major individual awards in the Eastern and Western conferences, respectively.
For Mott, Terry Warner earns coach of the year after leading the Bears to a 25-5 conference record and an Eastern Conference crown as part of an overall 35-13 record. Maggie Boehm is selected both the Player and Freshman of the Year.
Marc Kibby coached Lansing to a 27-3 Western mark and conference title en route to a 41-17 record overall. Leading the way for the Stars were Western Player of the Year Jenna Morse and Freshman of the Year Kyra Shadduck.
Pacing the Northern Conference awards was Alexis Mielke of Mid Michigan College who was named both the Player and Freshman of the Year. The Coach of the Year is David Veihl from Muskegon Community College after guiding the squad to a 19-1 conference-winning ledger (28-12); last season, the Jayhawks 11-14 and 11-18, respectively.
The Co-Head Coaches of the Year are Katie Scheuer, Lake Michigan College; and Jim Beard, Macomb Community College, by virtue of taking their squads to the national championships as the MCCAA did not declare an overall league champion this spring.
For Glen Oaks, a total of five players received recognition, including spots on the All-MCCAA Team for sophomore pitcher Dakota Sigler and freshman pitcher Ava Mejia. Both also landed on the All-Western Conference First Team and Mejia was named to the Western Conference All-Freshman Team. Mejia finished the year with a 9-6 record and a 2.75 ERA and 85 strikeouts. She had a .232 hitting percentage with 13 hits and 12 RBI in 56 at-bats. Sigler produced 15 hits and 17 RBI in 68 plate appearances for a .221 hitting percentage. Sigler finished the year in the circle with a 6-6 record, a 3.13 ERA and 53 strikeouts.
Earning spots on the All-Western Conference Second Team were sophomore second baseman Kacie Scott, freshman shortstop Sage Pruett and freshman pitcher Aimee Reinhardt. Scott hit for a .289 average and racked up six home runs, 18 RBI and stole eight bases to go with 26 runs scored. Pruett hit .367 with a pair of home runs, 13 RBI, 19 runs scored and eight stolen bases. Reinhardt finished the season with a 2-1 record, a 4.38 ERA, and she led the Vikings at the plate with 36 hits, 36 RBI, a .383 hitting percentage and nine home runs.
