GOCC softball wins Game 2 vs. Mid Michigan
Vikings split non-conference doubleheader at home.
Glen Oaks Community College hosted Mid Michigan College in a non-conference softball doubleheader Tuesday and the Vikings came away with a Game 2 victory.
Game 1
Mid Michigan College defeated Glen Oaks Community College 13-11 in the opener despite a late push from the Vikings.
Glen Oaks fell behind by six runs entering the bottom of the seventh inning but rallied with four runs, highlighted by a grand slam from freshman left fielder Kourtney Zarycki.
Mid Michigan opened the scoring in the third inning with two home runs and added three more runs in the fourth on another home run to extend its lead.
The Vikings answered in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 7-7. Sophomore first baseman Audrie Dugan drew a walk, followed by RBI singles from Zarycki, freshman third baseman Grace Zimmerman, and sophomore shortstop Grace Blanchard.
Mid Michigan regained the lead in the fifth inning on a double and continued to build its advantage before holding off the late Glen Oaks rally.
Freshman pitcher Hannah Brinks took the loss, allowing 11 runs on 13 hits over five innings while striking out three and walking one. Freshman pitcher Cassie Holland worked two innings in relief.
Glen Oaks totaled 17 hits in the game. Freshman catcher Elizabeth Flores led the way, going 4-for-4 at the plate. Zimmerman, Dugan, freshman designated player Kaidee Gonser, and Blanchard each recorded multiple hits, while Dugan drew two walks. The Vikings turned two double plays defensively.
Mid Michigan collected 14 hits and turned one double play.
Game 2
Glen Oaks Community College responded with a 13-4 victory over Mid Michigan College in the nightcap.
Mid Michigan took an early lead in the top of the first on a solo home run, but Glen Oaks answered immediately with six runs in the bottom half of the inning. The biggest blow came from freshman pitcher/first baseman Brooklynn Root, who launched a three-run home run to left field.
Glen Oaks added to its lead in the second inning on a fielder's choice by Root and a sacrifice fly by freshman catcher Elizabeth Flores.
Sophomore pitcher Audrie Dugan paced the offense with three hits in four at-bats, including a solo home run in the third inning along with singles in the first and fourth innings.
The Vikings continued to extend the lead in the fourth inning when freshman left fielder Kourtney Zarycki hit a three-run home run to left field.
Freshman pitcher Cassie Holland earned the win, allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings while striking out six and walking four.
Glen Oaks finished with 12 hits. Root and Zarycki each drove in three runs, while freshman right fielder Josie Stephenson added two hits in two at-bats. Holland also drew two walks as the Vikings showed patience at the plate with seven total walks. Glen Oaks played error-free defensively, with freshman center fielder Braylyn Hernandez recording six putouts.
Mid Michigan recorded seven hits, with multiple-hit performances and four walks, and turned one double play.
