Glen Oaks traveled to Lake Michigan College Saturday for a MCCAA Western Conference doubleheader against Lake Michigan College. The Lakers, who are in second place in the conference behind GOCC, were able to pick up two wins and tighten the race as the regular season winds down. The Vikings slipped to 28-12 overall and 20-6 in league play, while LMC improved to 23-9 overall and 17-7 in the league.
Game 1
Glen Oaks Community College fell to Lake Michigan College 4-3 on Saturday at Lake Michigan College in a game decided on the final play. The contest was tied at three in the bottom of the eighth when Lake Michigan College delivered a walk-off single to score the winning run.
Glen Oaks struck first in the top of the first inning. Freshman Kourtney Zarycki (LF) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and freshman Grace Zimmerman (3B) followed with an RBI double to center field to give the Vikings an early 2-0 lead.
Lake Michigan College rallied late to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly, setting up the extra-inning finish.
Freshman Cassie Holland (P) started in the circle for Glen Oaks, allowing three runs on six hits over 6.2 innings while striking out four and walking four. Freshman Hannah Brinks (1B) was charged with the loss in relief, allowing one run on three hits in one-third of an inning.
Zimmerman, Brinks, and Zarycki each recorded an RBI for the Vikings, while Zarycki led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance. Glen Oaks finished with seven hits, turned one double play, and committed no errors. Zimmerman led the defense with six chances.
Game 2
Lake Michigan College completed the doubleheader sweep with a 4-0 win over Glen Oaks.
Lake Michigan College opened the scoring in the second inning with an RBI single and added to its lead with runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Sophomore Audrie Dugan (P) took the loss for Glen Oaks, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits over six innings while striking out six and walking three.
Freshman Cassie Holland (CF), freshman Maddy Lewis (2B), Dugan, Zarycki, and Brinks each recorded one hit for the Vikings, who totaled five hits in the game. Glen Oaks again played clean defense, turning one double play without committing an error. Freshman Braylyn Hernandez (C) led the team with six defensive chances.
