GOCC women cruise to win
Vikings hammer Andrews University Berrien Springs
The Glen Oaks Community College women's basketball team got back in the win column, reestablished some swagger and got everyone involved offensively in a 94-47 nonconference home victory Monday over Andrews University Berrien Springs.
It was exactly what the Vikings (8-8) needed after a couple recent heartbreaking losses earlier this month. Glen Oaks was off and running in the first quarter after nearly every player on the roster scored, including a pair of 3-pointers by Sarah DeKoning, three buckets by Abby Youmans and five points by Chelsi Zyla.
The Vikings built a 27-10 lead through the first 10 minutes of play and kept piling it on. Amanda Barber ended up knocking down five triples en route to a game-high 17 points, DeKoning finished with 12, and both Morgan Kurdziel and Kamryn Washington registered 11.
Glen Oaks shot 50 percent from the floor and 38.7 percent from behind the arc, outscoring Andrews 36-6 from 3-point land.
Lilyana Coleman and Youmans each poured in nine points, Kaytlin Smith had eight, Kylie Quist and Alea Fisher both added six, and Zyla registered five.
DeKoning and Kurdziel led the Vikings with eight rebounds apiece, and Washington and Smith each grabbed seven. Washington paced GOCC with eight assists and Kurdziel had four steals.
Glen Oaks is back in action against Michigan Community College Athletic Association foe Kellogg Wednesday at home at 5:30 p.m.
