GOCC women top Kirtland
Vikings win second in a row.
Good things come in pairs. In its second game in as many nights, the Glen Oaks Community College women's basketball team collected a 65-60 victory at Kirtland Saturday for its second straight win.
Kennedy Lockett led the Vikings with 15 points, which included a 3-for-6 effort behind the arc. Tayler Denton and Jayla Parker-Vincent each finished with 11. Leigha Shudell was next in line with nine points.
Down 8-0 in the first quarter, the Vikings chipped away with a pair of Zy'Asija Scott free throws, a 3-pointer by Lockett (15 points) and a Shudell layup to get back in it early. Lilly Hofmeister's made jumper and two more foul shots by Lockett cut the defecit to one point with a little over a minute to go in the first quarter and it would be a battle the rest of the way.
In the second frame, Parker-Vincent hit a jumper and Scott scored five straight points via the foul line and trey to set up a Denton triple that gave GOCC a 22-20 advantage. Kirtland would end up with a 33-32 advantage at the break.
A 3-pointer by Lockett at the 7:25 mark in the third quarter gave GOCC a 39-36 lead. She'd bang in another triple three minutes later to maintain a three-pont advantage for Glen Oaks. Shudell extended it to five by the end of the frame.
Shelby McDaniel's free throw and Parker-Vincent's 3-ponter in the fourth quarter produced the Vikings' biggest lead of the game at 52-43 but Kirtland wouldn't go away. Shudell connected on a big 3-point buckett with 1:15 to play to make it a seven-point game. Kirtland cut it to three with 37 seconds left but GOCC was solid at the foul line down the stretch to hold on. Denton made a four at the stripe to seal the win.
Scott finished with seven points, Hofmeister had five, Jordyn Partee added four, and McDaniel had three. Shudell pulled down a team-best six rebounds, while Partee had five.
Glen Oaks improved to 2-4 overall.
