Lady Vikings survive wild finish at Montcalm
GOCC women's basketball wins third straight.
A three-game road trip yielded three straight wins for the Glen Oaks women's basketball team. The Vikings held on for a 44-39 victory at Montcalm Monday night to head into Thanksgiving break on a high note.
Zy'Asija Scott scored eight of her team-high 14 points in the first quarter to lead Glen Oaks, which improved to 3-4 overall. She was 5-for-11 from the field and 4-for-6 from the foul line for the night.
Despite a tough shooting night for both teams, the Vikings were able to eke out the win at the foul line in the final minute.
Trailing 39-37 with 32 seconds to play, Jordyn Partee stole the ball and took it the other way for a game-tying layup. Montcalm was charged with a technical foul and Shudell knocked down both free throws for a quick, four-point swing. The Vikings maintained possession with a chance to go up six with 17.8 seconds to play after Braylyn Hernandez drew a foul away from the ball. She'd make 1 of 2 from the stripe for a 42-39 advantage.
Scott made a steal at midcourt and was fouled on the other end with 12.6 on the clock. She made the first but a lane violation nullified the second as GOCC took a 43-39 lead. Scott came up with another swipe as Montcalm tried to get the ball up the floor. Scott was fouled and a double-technical foul was called after the play on Montcalm's Karlie Bacon and Scott, which resulted in Scott being ejected after she received a tech earlier in the game.
Shelby McDaniel made 1 of 2 free throw attempts for Glen Oaks to seal the win.
The Vikings got out to a 12-6 lead after the first quarter of play, which included buckets from Tayler Denton and Shudell to go with Scott's eight points.
Montcalm started the second quarter with a 7-0 run to take a 13-12 lead. Hernandez hit a 3-pointer midway through the frame to put GOCC back in front, 16-13. Montcalm produced a pair of quick baskets down low to regain an 18-16 advantage. A Lilly Hofemeister putback tied the game and a Hernandez free throw put the Vikings in front, 19-18, before intermission.
Partee went 1-for-2 at the foul line twice and Scott hit a pair from the stripe early in the third quarter for a 23-18 cushion. Shudell cleaned up the offensive boards with a putback at 6:25 to increase the visitors' lead to seven. Glen Oaks would take a 29-22 lead into the fourth quarter.
Hernandez finished with eight points, four rebounds and an assist, and both Partee and Shudell had six points. Partee added five boards and seven steals, while Shudell had six rebounds and three steals. Hofmeister chipped in three points and eight rebounds, Kennedy Lockett, Tracy Ackely and Denton each finished with two points, and McDaniel had one. Denton tallied six steals and four rebounds and Ackley pulled down eight boards.
