GOCC women take down Kellogg
Shudell scores 22 in the win.
A trio of Glen Oaks women's hoopers reached double figures, led by a 22-point effort from Leigha Shudell, in a 64-61 MCCAA Western Conference victory over Kellogg Wednesday in Centreville.
Shudell banged in 5 of 15 3-point attempts and was 7-for-18 from the field for the night. Kennedy Lockett hit three treys en route to 16 points and Jordyn Partee shot 56 percent from the floor for 10 points. A layup by Partee and a free throw by Shudell in the final minute helped GOCC secure its first conference win of the year.
Glen Oaks pieced together a 14-8 lead heading into the second quarter but Kellogg opened the frame with a 7-3 run to make it a one possession game. Tracy Ackley knocked down a pair of free throws and Lockett connected on back-to-back shots from deep to give the Vikings a 25-15 cushion. Zy'Asija Scott found Jayla Parker-Vincent streaking down the lane for a bucket but the well went dry over the final few minutes for GOCC as Kellogg closed the gap to 27-26 to end the half.
Partee scored in transition and Lockett hit three foul shots to get things rolling in the third quarter. Kellogg answered and managed to take a 32-31 lead with 6:10 on the clock by continuing to work the post. Shudell regained the lead for GOCC with a pair of free throws before a big bucket by Tayler Denton off a Kellogg turnover made it a three-point advantage. Shudell would later drain a triple for a 38-34 Glen Oaks lead. Kellogg was able to beat a Viking press to make it a one-possession game briefly, but Partee responded with a drive to the hoop and Shudell made a pair of free throws for a 42-36 lead with a little over a minute to go in the third. Lockett launched a deep 3-pointer to quickly boost GOCC's lead to 11 to close out the period.
Braylyn Hernandez hit a floater in the lane for a 49-36 advantage to start the fourth and Shudell scored on a putback and an uncontested 3-pointer to make it 57-46 with five to play. Kellogg went back to utilizing its size down low to get back within two points with just over a minute remaing. Glen Oaks, which went several minutes without a field goal, got one when it needed one most on a Shudell jumper, but Kellogg immediately negated it on the other end. Glen Oaks was able to hang on with a Shudell foul shot and lay-in by Partee.
Denton finished the game with six points, Hernandez had three, and Scott, Ackley and Parker-Vincent each had two. Partee paced the squad with eight rebounds and 10 steals. Glen Oaks outscored Kellogg 13-6 at the stripe.
