Glen Oaks volleyball falls at home to Lake Michigan College
Wimberly hás outstanding outing for Vikings.
Glen Oaks volleyball was defeated at home 3-0 in Tuesday's MCCAA Western Conference match against Lake Michigan College. The final tally was 25-21, 25-20, 25-17 in favor of the Red Hawks.
For the Vikings, Kaytlin Smith was the top attacker with 10 kills and a .421 hit percentage. Alayna Wimberly was second with eight kills and Amya Shuppert had five. LMC's Jillian Bruckner led all players with 18 kills.
Wimberly had the most digs for GOCC with 19, closely followed by Alea Fisher with 18. Nicole Smothermon posted 23 assists and Abby Youmans had four blocks. Leading the Red Hawks defensively was Kaylee McDaniel with 18 digs.
In the first set, the Vikings climbed back to within 20-17 and rallied again to make it 24-21, but that was as close as they got. Down 7-0 to start the second set, Glen Oaks rallied and tied things up at 10-10. The Vikings took the first lead of the game when a Wimberly kill made it 13-12. She connected again with a kill and a tip to give the Vikings a 17-14 advantage. A LMC ace helped stop the bleeding and the Red Hawks tied the match at 19 all and they'd go on to close out the game.
Tied at 11-11 in the third, LMC pulled away with some solid hitting and energized defense down the stretch.
Tuesday's result puts Glen Oaks at 0-2 in the Western Conference and 2-9 overall, while Lake Michigan College is 10-6 overall and 2-0 atop the conference standings. The Vikings hit the road for their next two league matches with a trip to Ancilla Thursday, followed by Lansing next Tuesday. GOCC returns home on Thursday, September 28 against Kellogg.
