Vikings take five-set win over Kellogg
After taking the first two sets, Glen Oaks survives marathon match.
Glen Oaks volleyball claimed a back-and-forth affair at home Thursday in a five-set battle with Kellogg. The Vikings ultimately took the match 27-25, 25-14, 21-25, 16-25, 15-6 for their second conference win of the season.
The first set was dead even with GOCC squeaking out the 27-25 victory to earn the early advantage. The Vikings dominated set #2 25-14, but the Bruins refused to concede, evening the contest with a 25-21 game three win and 25-15 game four win. Glen Oaks prevailed in the end 15-6, helped by their 13 team aces compared to Kellog's six.
Kaytlin Smith led the Viking offense with 15 kills on 34 attacks. Amya Shuppert added nine kills with eight apiece by Alayna Wimberly and Eliana Wilson. Smith also contributed five blocks. Riana Wilson and Wimberly both had four aces and Alea Fisher added three.
Wimberly was the defensive leader on 18 digs, followed by Nicole Smothermon with 17, Shuppert with 16, and both Wilson and Fisher with 15. Smothermon added 40 assists as the setter.
Kellogg's leading attacker was Gabrianna Kringle with 16 kills. Kate Doyle had a match-best 21 digs and Julia May contributed 17 assists.
The victory puts Glen Oaks at 2-3 in the MCCAA Western Conference and 4-10 overall, while Kellogg falls to 3-2 in conference play and 11-5 overall. The Vikings are back at home Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against Kalamazoo Valley.
