Volunteer State baseball takes two vs. Glen Oaks
The Glen Oaks Community College baseball team was in Tennessee over the weekend for a pair of early-season non-conference doubleheaders against Volunteer State, who picked up both wins Friday.
Game 1
Volunteer State 8, Glen Oaks 4
Volunteer State Community College opened the scoring in the first inning when Blank doubled to drive in two runs. The lead grew in the bottom of the second as Glen Oaks committed an error and Baker doubled to left field, with each play resulting in a run.
Glen Oaks responded in the top of the third inning to tie the game. Freshman Devon Castro (DH) drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run, sophomore Erick Marin (3B) followed with a sacrifice lineout that brought home another, and sophomore Logan O'Malley (RF) singled to drive in two runs.
Volunteer State regained the lead in the bottom of the third. Lorenz singled in a run, and a pair of Glen Oaks errors allowed three additional runs to score.
Truitt earned the win for Volunteer State, allowing two hits and no runs over two and one-third innings with one strikeout and one walk. Freshman Kaleb Williams (RHP) took the loss for Glen Oaks after working three innings and allowing eight runs, one earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Boswell started for Volunteer State and surrendered four runs on one hit in two and two-thirds innings, striking out five and walking five. Lester recorded the save.
O'Malley led Glen Oaks offensively with two RBIs and went 1-for-4. Freshman Grant Holroyd (C), Castro and O'Malley each recorded a hit for the Vikings. Glen Oaks showed patience at the plate with nine walks, led by sophomore Braeden Becker (CF), Marin and freshman Jace Gray (2B) with two apiece.
Blank paced Volunteer State with two RBIs, while Lorenz, batting eighth, went 2-for-3. Volunteer State turned three double plays, committed no errors and was led defensively by Stewart, who handled 10 chances.
Game 2
Volunteer State 18, Glen Oaks 3
Volunteer State scored twice in the bottom of the first inning following a Glen Oaks error and a sacrifice fly by Lorenz.
In the second inning, Volunteer State erupted for 11 runs on six hits. Baker tripled to drive in three runs, Denning homered to right field for two runs, Lorenz singled in two, Rice added a three-run single, and Denning later singled home another run.
Volunteer State added to its lead in the bottom of the third. Volunteer State singled in a run, Volunteer State doubled to bring home two more, and Volunteer State later scored after tagging up.
Volunteer State earned the win after allowing no hits and two runs over one and one-third innings with two strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Jayden Sloniker (RHP) took the loss for Glen Oaks, allowing nine runs, six earned, on four hits in one inning with two strikeouts and four walks. McCord started for Volunteer State and allowed one unearned run on one hit over three innings, striking out two and walking two.
Sophomore Caleb Mallory (SS) and Castro, who started Game 2 at catcher, each drove in a run for Glen Oaks. Gray, serving as the designated hitter, and Castro accounted for the Vikings' two hits.
Volunteer State finished with 10 hits. Baker, Denning and Lorenz each collected two hits, while Denning and Volunteer State each drove in three runs. Volunteer State also drew 12 walks, led by Perez, Armstrong, Blank and Menendez with two apiece.
