Vikings broom Volunteer State
The Vikings left Tennessee with a little revenge as the GOCC baseball team swept Volunteer State Saturday.
Game 1
Glen Oaks 6, Volunteer State 4
Glen Oaks opened the scoring in the first inning when sophomore Caleb Mallory (3B) singled to drive in a run. The Vikings added to the lead in the top of the third as sophomore Braeden Becker (CF) lined an RBI single down the right-field line and Mallory followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
Volunteer State got on the board in the bottom of the third on a solo home run by Rice, but Glen Oaks answered with three more runs in the top of the fifth to extend the advantage. Volunteer State made things interesting in the eighth inning, scoring three runs on two hit batters and a walk, but could not complete the comeback.
Sophomore Collin Yoder earned the win for Glen Oaks, allowing four hits and one run over four innings while striking out five and walking two. Godsey took the loss for Volunteer State after giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits over three innings with six strikeouts. Freshman Jacob Jackson picked up the save, and freshman Brayden Grass also worked in relief for the Vikings.
Becker led Glen Oaks offensively, going 3-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI, while also stealing two bases. Mallory drove in two runs from the cleanup spot. Glen Oaks stole three bases in the game and committed no errors defensively. Freshman Devon Castro (C) handled a game-high 10 chances in the field.
Rice went 1-for-3 and drove in two runs for Volunteer State. Perez, Denning, Harris and Blank each added a hit, and Volunteer State turned one double play.
Game 2
Glen Oaks 12, Volunteer State 2
Using patience at the plate and steady pitching throughout the game, the Vikings finished off the sweep.
The Vikings scored three runs in the top of the first inning on a passed ball and a Volunteer State error. Glen Oaks added three more in the second behind RBI singles from sophomore Erick Marin (1B) and freshman Devon Castro (DH).
Glen Oaks broke the game open in the third inning. Sophomore Logan O'Malley (RF) singled to drive in two runs, Castro drew a bases-loaded walk, and freshman Jace Gray (2B) lifted a sacrifice fly as the Vikings pushed the lead to 10-2.
Freshman Ryne Maag earned the win for Glen Oaks, allowing four hits and two runs over five innings while striking out two and walking three. Park took the loss for Volunteer State after recording one out and allowing three runs, one earned. Freshman Reed Nelson and freshman Drake Graver combined to shut down Volunteer State out of the bullpen.
Becker and O'Malley each collected two hits for Glen Oaks. Gray, Castro and O'Malley drove in two runs apiece as the Vikings drew 13 walks. Marin and Gray each worked three walks. Glen Oaks stole eight bases in the game, with freshman Dominic Annerino (SS) and Gray each swiping multiple bags. The Vikings turned one double play and did not commit an error, with Marin handling the most chances in the field.
For Volunteer State, Baker, Denning, Harris and Rice each recorded a hit. Denning and Rice drove in the two runs, and Eddington stole two bases.
