The Glen Oaks Community College baseball team traveled to Arkansas State University Mid-South over the weekend for a string of four games. The Vikings opened with a win over the Greyhounds before falling in the second game Friday and dropping both contests on Tuesday.
Friday
Game 1
Glen Oaks Community College 10, Arkansas State University Mid-South Greyhounds 1
Glen Oaks Community College broke open a tight game with a six-run fifth inning and defeated Arkansas State University Mid-South 10-1 in the opener of Friday's doubleheader.
The Vikings struck first in the second inning when sophomore Erick Marin (3B) stole home to give Glen Oaks a 1-0 lead.
Arkansas State Mid-South tied the game in the bottom of the second on a double by Arkansas State Mid-South that scored one run.
Glen Oaks seized control in the fifth. Freshman Vince Gebraad (LF) drew a walk to force in a run, sophomore Caleb Mallory (SS) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, sophomore Braeden Becker (CF) walked to bring in another run, Marin was hit by a pitch to score one, and freshman Devon Castro (DH) doubled to drive in two.
The Vikings added three more runs in the seventh. Mallory hit a solo home run to left field, and freshman Teegan Helmle (DH) doubled to score two more.
Freshman Jacob Jackson (P) earned the win, allowing five hits and one run — none earned — over six innings while striking out seven and walking two. Freshman Reed Nelson (P) pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief.
Logan O'Malley (RF), Marin, Becker, Helmle, Oliver Nisen (1B), Mallory, Grant Holroyd (C) and Castro each collected one hit. Helmle, Mallory and Castro drove in two runs apiece. Glen Oaks turned one double play.
Game 2
Arkansas State University Mid-South Greyhounds 17, Glen Oaks Community College 7
Glen Oaks' offense produced nine hits, but Arkansas State Mid-South scored 11 runs in the sixth inning to secure a 17-7 win in Game 2.
Arkansas State Mid-South opened the scoring in the third on a sacrifice fly and a home run to left field to take a 2-0 lead.
Glen Oaks answered in the fourth. Becker homered to center field to drive in two runs, and Helmle singled to score one, giving the Vikings a 3-2 advantage.
Arkansas State Mid-South tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run.
In the fifth, Mallory hit a solo home run to center to break the tie, and Marin followed with a double to extend the lead to 5-3.
Arkansas State Mid-South regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a three-run home run.
Glen Oaks went back in front in the sixth. Helmle doubled to right field to score one, and sophomore Jace Gray (2B) hit into a double play that brought home another run, giving the Vikings a 7-6 lead.
The Greyhounds responded with 11 runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away. The key hit was a two-run single by Arkansas State Mid-South.
Freshman Collin Yoder (P) took the loss, allowing six runs on five hits over four and two-thirds innings with three strikeouts and three walks. O. Johnson started for Arkansas State Mid-South, allowing five runs over four and two-thirds innings. T. Brantley earned the win in relief.
Becker finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Marin, Becker, Helmle and Mallory each had two hits. Glen Oaks totaled nine hits.
Arkansas State Mid-South collected 10 hits and drew eight walks. Arkansas State Mid-South's No. 9 hitter led the team with three hits. Glen Oaks Community College built an early five-run lead but could not hold off Arkansas State University Mid-South in a 12-6 loss Saturday in the opener of a doubleheader.
The Vikings erupted for five runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Caleb Mallory (SS) doubled to score one run, sophomore Logan O'Malley (RF) singled home one, freshman Oliver Nisen (DH) doubled to drive in two, and freshman Vince Gebraad (LF) reached on a fielder's choice that allowed a run to score, giving Glen Oaks a 5-0 advantage.
Arkansas State Mid-South answered with four runs in the bottom of the first and pulled ahead in the third. A two-run single and a wild pitch gave the Greyhounds a 7-5 lead.
Freshman Teegan Helmle (3B) hit a solo home run to center field in the top of the fourth to trim the deficit to 7-6.
The Greyhounds broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs on four hits. A solo home run started the rally, followed by a run-scoring fielder's choice, a double that brought in one, and another double that plated two more.
Freshman Kaleb Williams (P) took the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) on eight hits over 2 2/3 innings. Freshman Thomas North (P) gave up five runs in one inning of relief. Freshman Drake Graver (P), sophomore Nick Schultheis (P) and freshman Caden Hall (P) combined for 2 1/3 scoreless innings to close the game.
Nisen drove in two runs from the designated hitter spot. O'Malley went 2-for-4 to lead Glen Oaks in hits. The Vikings turned two double plays.
Arkansas State Mid-South collected 12 hits and drew seven walks. Arkansas State Mid-South's leadoff hitter finished 4-for-4 with three RBIs. The Greyhounds stole three bases and committed no errors.
Game 2
Arkansas State University Mid-South Greyhounds 5, Glen Oaks Community College 2
Glen Oaks dropped the nightcap 5-2 despite drawing nine walks.
The Vikings scored first in the top of the first inning when freshman Jace Gray (2B) singled to bring home a run.
Arkansas State Mid-South tied the game in the bottom of the second on a double to right field.
Glen Oaks regained the lead in the third when Nisen grounded out to score one run and make it 2-1.
The Greyhounds answered in the bottom of the fourth. A walk, a single to center field, and an infield single each drove in a run to give Arkansas State Mid-South a 4-2 advantage. The Greyhounds added another run in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-2.
Freshman Ryne Maag (P) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings while walking five and striking out one. Freshman Reed Nelson (P) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.
Gray finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. Helmle recorded one hit and drew two walks. Glen Oaks turned two double plays.
