Ancilla baseball charges past Glen Oaks
Vikings fall at home in MCCAA contest.
Glen Oaks Community College stayed within reach throughout, but Marian University's Ancilla College pulled away late for a 10-8 victory on Saturday at Glen Oaks. The game was tied at eight in the top of the ninth when the Chargers' Negron delivered a two-run double to secure the win.
Ancilla College finished with 12 hits, while Glen Oaks totaled nine in the contest .
The Chargers opened the scoring in the fourth inning on an error. Glen Oaks responded in the bottom half, as freshman first baseman Oliver Nisen singled to tie the game at 1-1.
The Vikings took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when sophomore left fielder McCullan Greene singled to score a run. Ancilla answered in the sixth, scoring seven runs to take control. The Chargers strung together multiple hits and situational plays, including singles by Quick, Paris, Weaver, and Lanphier, a hit-by-pitch, and a sacrifice fly.
Glen Oaks battled back to even the score at 8-8 in the seventh inning. Sophomore third baseman Erick Marin singled, Nisen doubled, and additional baserunners reached via hit-by-pitch before Greene drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Ancilla College broke the tie in the ninth on Negron's two-run double.
Freshman pitcher Ryne Maag took the loss for Glen Oaks, allowing two runs on two hits over three innings with three strikeouts. Freshman right-hander Kaleb Williams started and allowed seven hits and six runs (none earned) over 5 1/3 innings. Sophomore Travis North worked 2/3 of an inning in relief.
For Ancilla College, Vaca earned the win with two scoreless innings, allowing no hits.
At the plate, Nisen (first baseman) and freshman designated hitter Devon Castro each recorded two hits for Glen Oaks. Castro drove in two runs, finishing 2-for-4. The Vikings also stole three bases and turned one double play.
Ancilla College was led by Negron, who drove in three runs and went 2-for-3. Weaver, Negron, Quick, and Fry each collected two hits for the Chargers, who also turned one double play.
