Vikings cruise past Edison State
GOCC steals school-record 20 bases.
Glen Oaks Community College set a single-game school record with 20 stolen bases and defeated Edison State, 10-4, in a nine-inning non-conference game Tuesday at home.
The Chargers opened the scoring in the first inning on a double that brought home one run. Glen Oaks answered in the second when freshman catcher Grant Holroyd singled to center field to even the score at 1-1.
Edison State regained the lead in the third on a solo home run, but the Vikings responded with a three-run bottom half of the inning. Sophomore shortstop Caleb Mallory delivered a sacrifice fly, freshman first baseman Oliver Nisen reached on a fielder's choice that scored a run, and freshman designated hitter Devon Castro added an RBI single to center to make it 4-2.
Glen Oaks continued to build its lead throughout the middle innings, scoring in five straight frames. The Vikings finished with 11 hits, with sophomore third baseman Erick Marin, freshman outfielder Vince Gebraad, Nisen, and Castro each collecting two hits. Nisen and Castro drove in two runs apiece.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Christian Smigiel earned the win in relief, allowing one hit and one run over 2 2/3 innings with two strikeouts and three walks. Freshman Reed Nelson started and allowed two runs (one earned) over 2 1/3 innings. Freshman Brayden Grass, sophomore Travis North, and freshman Drake Graver also appeared in relief.
Sophomore outfielder Logan O'Malley reached base consistently with three walks, while O'Malley, sophomore outfielder Braeden Becker, sophomore utility player Tyler Shisler, freshman infielder Jace Gray, Nisen, and Castro each recorded multiple stolen bases. The Vikings also turned two double plays defensively.
Edison State tallied 11 hits in the contest, with two players recording two hits each. A middle-of-the-order bat led the Chargers with two RBIs in a 2-for-4 performance.
