Viking baseball nabs comeback victory vs. Mid Michigan
GOCC scores six runs in the seventh inning.
Glen Oaks Community College rallied for a 15-14 victory over Mid Michigan College in a nine-inning non-conference game Tuesday at home, overcoming a four-run deficit in a back-and-forth contest.
Glen Oaks struck first in the opening inning when sophomore shortstop Caleb Mallory lifted a sacrifice fly and freshman first baseman Oliver Nisen followed with an RBI single to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead. Mid Michigan answered in the second to tie the game, then used a three-run fourth inning to take a 5-3 advantage.
The Vikings regained control in the fifth as Nisen drew a bases-loaded walk and sophomore left fielder Tyler Shisler delivered a two-run double, pushing Glen Oaks back in front, 7-5. Mid Michigan responded again in the sixth, plating three runs to reclaim the lead.
Trailing late, Glen Oaks delivered its decisive blow in the seventh inning, erupting for six runs on seven hits. The highlight came from freshman second baseman Teegan Helmle, who launched a three-run home run to center field to cap the rally and give the Vikings a 13-11 edge.
Nisen led the offensive effort with a perfect 4-for-4 day, adding two RBIs and three runs scored. Shisler and Helmle each drove in three runs, while sophomore right fielder Logan O'Malley collected three hits and two stolen bases. Sophomore center fielder Braeden Becker also reached base four times and stole two bases as Glen Oaks finished with 18 hits and six stolen bases.
Freshman designated hitter Jace Gray added two hits and an RBI, while sophomore third baseman Erick Marin contributed an RBI. Behind the plate, freshman catcher Grant Holroyd added a hit in relief duties.
On the mound, freshman left-hander Ryne Maag earned the win in relief, allowing six runs (two earned) over three innings. Sophomore right-hander Collin Yoder started and worked 3.2 innings, while freshman Reed Nelson provided 2.1 innings of relief.
Mid Michigan tallied 16 hits in the game and was led by its center fielder, who drove in three runs from the ninth spot in the lineup, while its first baseman recorded three hits.
Glen Oaks also turned a double play defensively in the victory.
