The Glen Oaks Community College baseball team pocketed a pair of home wins Friday against Ancilla College in a MCCAA Western Conference doubleheader.
Game 1
Glen Oaks Community College earned a dramatic 7-6 walk-off victory over Ancilla College in Friday's opener at Glen Oaks. Trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh, the Vikings rallied as an error brought in one run, sophomore outfielder Braeden Becker singled to tie the game, and freshman pitcher/infielder Oliver Nisen delivered a two-run double to secure the win.
Glen Oaks opened the scoring in the first when sophomore infielder Caleb Mallory doubled home a run. Ancilla answered in the fourth on a single by the Chargers to even the game at 1-1. The Vikings regained a 2-1 lead later in the inning on a groundout by freshman infielder Teegan Helmle.
Ancilla surged ahead in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs on three hits to take a 6-3 lead, highlighted by a two-run double from the Chargers. Glen Oaks responded with four runs in the bottom half to complete the comeback.
Sophomore pitcher Travis North earned the win in relief, allowing one hit and one run over two-thirds of an inning. Sophomore pitcher Jayden Sloniker started and struck out six over 6.1 innings. Ancilla's starter worked five innings, allowing two runs (one earned).
Glen Oaks totaled 11 hits, led by freshman infielder Jace Gray, who went 3-for-4. Nisen drove in two runs, while Becker added two hits and stole three bases. The Vikings swiped four bases and turned one double play.
Game 2
Glen Oaks completed the sweep with a 19-10 win over Ancilla College in the second game of the doubleheader.
Sophomore infielder/outfielder Tyler Shisler led the offensive effort with six RBIs on two hits, driving in runs in both the first and third innings. The Vikings scored nine runs in the opening frame, fueled by RBI singles from Shisler, freshman infielder Erick Marin, freshman catcher Devon Castro, Becker, Nisen, and sophomore outfielder Logan O'Malley.
Shisler added another RBI single in the third to extend the lead to 11-1. Glen Oaks continued to add on, including a five-run sixth inning that featured a hit-by-pitch RBI by Mallory, a three-run error, and a wild pitch.
Freshman pitcher Christian Smigiel earned the win in relief, allowing one run over 1.1 innings. Freshman pitcher Reed Nelson started and allowed one run over 2.2 innings. Freshman pitcher Drake Graver and freshman pitcher Caden Hall also contributed in relief.
Glen Oaks again recorded 11 hits, with Becker and Shisler each collecting two. The Vikings drew nine walks, with freshman outfielder Vince Gebraad and Mallory each earning two. O'Malley stole two bases as Glen Oaks totaled four steals.
Ancilla finished with nine hits, with the Chargers getting two-hit performances and two RBIs from multiple hitters. Ancilla also drew seven walks in the game.
