Vikings fall in exciting match vs. Roadrunners
In MCCAA and home opener, Vikings fall to Southwestern Michigan College in five
Glen Oaks volleyball lost a five-set heartbreaker Tuesday at home in their MCCAA Western Conference debut against Southwestern Michigan College. The Roadrunners ultimately defeated the Vikings 23-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 15-6. It was a great effort for Glen Oaks against a SMC team that has currently the second most overall wins of any MCCAA volleyball team thus far.
The two squads traded games with the first four each decided by four or fewer points. GOCC opened with a narrow 25-23 first game win, followed by SMC taking game two 25-21. The Vikings reclaimed the advantage by winning the third 25-21, but the Roadrunners again matched them and took the fourth 25-22. Southwestern Michigan was able to pull away 15-6 in the finale to escape with the road win.
Amya Shuppert had the most kills for Glen Oaks with ten, followed by Kaytlin Smith with nine, Adalae Hackett with eight, and Abigail Youmans with seven. Hackett had the best kill percentage for the Vikings at .263. SMC's Nikki Nate was the top attacker overall with 21 kills for her Roadrunners.
Defensively for the Vikings, Nicole Smothermon posted team highs with 35 assists and 21 digs. Alea Fisher added 18 digs. Smith had the most blocks with three solos. Alyana Wimberly contributed four aces.
The result puts Glen Oaks at 2-8 overall for the season, while Southwestern Michigan moves to 10-3. The two squads will meet again at SMC on Thursday, October 5. The league slate continues for GOCC on Tuesday, September 19 against Lake Michigan College. The Vikings will be back on their home court with a 6:30 p.m. ET start time.
