Viking volleyball sweeps Ancilla
GOCC nabs conference win at home.
In front of an energetic home crowd Thursday night, the Glen Oaks Community College women's volleyball team swept Marian University's Ancilla College 25-23, 25-12, 25-22 in Michigan Community College Athletic Association Western Division play.
The Vikings battled back from a five-point deficit in the opening game, outscoring Ancilla 8-1 down the stretch for an early cushion. Kayla Smith and Keegan Russell had critical kills late to secure the first win.
Glen Oaks cruised in Game 2 before a nail-biting third set when the home squad trailed 15-7. The Vikings rallied with both finesse and power at the net by Kayla Smith, an ace and a game-tying kill by Gina Smith (19-19), and a go-ahead ace by Karsyn Stebbins. Russell and Stebbins added kills late to complete the sweep.
In total, Kaytlin Smith finished with 13 kills, Kylie Quist had seven and both Russell and Gina Smith rattled off six. Alicyn Arevalo added three kills, Stebbins produced two and Elayna Zuidema had one.
Zuidema recorded 14 assists and Kulayjah Weller had 12. Russell and Arevalo added two assists apiece. Arevalo laced four aces to lead the team, while Gina Smith (three), Weller (two), Quist (two), Stebbins (two) and Tamerah Clay (one) also were effective from the service line.
Defensively, Arevalo and Kaytlin Smith both had a block, and Isabella Coy had a team-best nine digs. Gina Smith and Quist had five digs apiece, Russell chipped in four, and Weller, Zuidema and Stebbins all had three.
Glen Oaks is back in action Sept. 24 at home against Lansing Community College.
