Viking netters nab win over Ancilla
GOCC wins final three sets at home.
After Marian University's Ancilla College won the first set 25-18, the Glen Oaks volleyball team took the next three, 25-22, 26-24, 25-14, Thursday at home to claim its first MCCAA victory of the season.
The Vikings trailed 20-9 in the opening game but made things interesting late, providing some momentum the rest of the way. The Chargers got out to a 9-2 lead in the second set but GOCC pulled ahead, 11-10, and would stay ahead until Ancilla tied the set at 18-all. After a long rally, the Chargers held a 19-18 advantage but committed a hitting error to make it a tie contest again. Two consecutive points, including a kill by Bekah Beachey, gave the Vikings a 21-19 lead. There would be two more ties before Glen Oaks got an ace from Jaelyn Sundberg and a point from a point from DeRyke to close out the game.
Ancilla led 12-8 in the third set but the Vikings battled back to make it 14-14. The Chargers surged to a 22-18 advantage before a Beachey kill and an Abner ace stopped the bleeding to make it a two-point defecit. A Charger tip made it a 23-20 affair, but a clever dump by Maddie Osburn found the floor, as did her deep, two-handed shot on the next point, cutting Ancilla's lead down to 23-22. A Beachey kill tied the game and an error by Ancilla put the Vikings ahead 24-23. An attack that went long for GOCC tied the game but Osburn found the back left corner again to make it a 25-24 lead. An errant attack by Ancilla sealed the Game 3 win for Glen Oaks.
The Vikings jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the fourth game and cruised from there to close out the match.
